Jonata, Santa Barbara
Jonata estate is located near Santa Barbara, in the Ballard Canyon which is running north-south, parallel to highway 101 to its east, and is approximately two miles long. 34 hectares of the 237 hectares estate are planted with vine.
The north end of the canyon is narrow and winding, while the southern end comprises rolling hills and is thereby more open to the fog and cooling winds. The soil is mainly sandy.
The name Jonata commemorates the original 1845 Spanish land grant of the region, Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, which in the Chumash Indian language means “tall oak.”
Winery techniques are highly specialized: small-lot winemaking persists, often based on multiple picks within single blocks; whole berry ferments allow for clearly defined maceration techniques; small wooden fermentors allow superior temperature management and wood/fruit integration as well as both pumpovers and punchdowns to tailor tannin management.
Most of the wines produced by Jonata are single grape variety with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
